The study of fundamental properties of topological structures and their exploitation constitutes an emerging field in condensed matter research with new concepts being brought forward. I will discuss our recent work on various ferroelectric and multiferroic material systems using scanning probe microscopy as the main investigative tool, including a new method to investigate crackling noise of individual domain walls.
